Today was our first full day of work, for both the biofabrica as well as the biogardinera (bioswale). At the biofabrica we first had to clear out clay from around the existing foundation to expose the pre-laid rebar. This involved shoveling dirt out of a small trench in order to reveal the concrete underneath. After the clay was cleared off of the concrete, we shoveled gravel to get ready to mix concrete in the following days. At the biogardinera, a start for the foundation was dug out in order to create level ground for the filtering system and water transport system. Many ideas were mentioned for a tiered system of PVC piping in order to slow down water flow rates.

The team was able to stop at the mini supermarket in downtown Providencia de Dota for a little while, gathering some interesting snacks and drinks. They were all very affordable, which was very interesting for me to see when thinking about similar items in the US. I got a bag of cheese puffs and some cookies (galletas) which were both very good.

David talked to us about sustainable practices at the Tammy lodge, and it was very inspiring to hear given the current state of the country/planet. It was impactful for me to hear because I was so immersed in the environment and left me with a very visceral reaction. My main goal upon returning is to use a reusable container for storing/transporting food, and replacing any plastic containers/cups in my house with glass alternatives if at all possible.

At Leti y Gerardo’s house, me, Elian, and Aidan spent time with the family, and played card games. Leti was very good at them! We conversed with her most of the first day before heading to bed.
