Today began at 5:30am with saying one final goodbye to our host families before boarding the bus to travel to San José.

On the way, we stopped at the Irazú Volcano, the tallest volcano in Costa Rica at an elevation of 11,260ft. It was beautiful and clouds kept passing through us. At the end, we got rained out and decided it was time to keep driving.

Our next activity was a tour of Cartago. We started by visiting The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, an ornate and culturally significant Catholic church. Afterwards, we stopped for lunch. Everyone had Casaso with various proteins and some of us had mint lemonade.

After lunch, we drove the rest of the way to our hotel in San José where we had some time to relax and swim in the pool before dinner. It felt weird to be in the city again after spending ten days in lush Providenica, but it was also nice to make use of some hotel amenities we had been without. There were a variety of options when we sat down for dinner. People ordered chicken burgers, chicken and rice, grilled cheese and other meals. I had an amazing stir fry that I will never forget. Many of us also tried a juice made of Cas (a type of guava that isn't widely available in the United States) for the first time. It tasted light and citrus-y and I hope that I can have it again.
